Cops: New York man kidnaps, rapes Connecticut teen

GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) A 26-year-old New York man has been charged with kidnapping, raping and trying to strangle a Connecticut teenager he had been dating, after they argued in text messages and phone calls.

Police in Port Chester, New York, say they arrested Johanny Chavez on Monday, after his 19-year-old girlfriend went to Greenwich, Connecticut, police with the allegations.

The teen told police Chavez abducted her from her home in the Riverside section of Greenwich on Friday and took her to his home in nearby Port Chester, where she alleges he raped and tried to strangle her. She said she escaped Saturday.

Chavez was arraigned in court Tuesday and remains detained in New York. It's not clear if he has a lawyer.

Greenwich police say they also are investigating and may file charges.
