11-year-old boy dies in New Britain fire

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) -- New Britain officials say an 11-year-old boy has died and 11 other people have been left homeless by an early morning fire that swept through a multifamily home.

Authorities say Cade Townsend Jr. died in the blaze reported at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

He lived on the third floor of the three-family East Street home.

A fire lieutenant was treated and released from the hospital for a minor injury. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities say firefighters arrived on the scene to find the home fully engulfed. They tried to find the child reported trapped on the third floor but had to withdraw from the building due to dangerous conditions.

Resident Kenneth Anderson says the fire forced him to jump from a second-story window.

The cause is under investigation.
