Man charged with murder, assault in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) New Haven police have charged an 18-year-old city man with murder and assault in the shootings of two half-brothers in March.

Police Chief Dean Esserman announced Monday that Jeffrey Covington was arrested April 16. Seventeen-year-old Taijhon Washington was killed and his half-brother, 16-year-old Trayvon Washington, survived a gunshot wound to his head but was partially blinded.

The victims' relatives say they're relieved by the arrest, but still living with the pain caused by the shootings.

Police say the Washington brothers had a feud with Covington and several other people. Authorities say reports that the brothers were gang members haven't been confirmed.

Covington is detained on $2 million bail. Officials with the state public defender's office, which is representing Covington, didn't immediately return a message Tuesday.
