UConn Spring Weekend: lots of activities, police

STORRS, Conn. (AP) Numerous student activities and a heavy police presence are planned for the University of Connecticut's Spring Weekend, which has been toned down from the rowdy celebrations of the past.

Spring Weekend runs today to Saturday at the Storrs campus. Non-students are barred from dormitories and activities, while police will be cracking down on alcohol use.

Among the events scheduled are a mud volleyball tournament, a campus spring cleanup, student and faculty talent competitions, a 5K fun run, a food truck festival and live music.

UConn officials and police have taken numerous measures over the past several years to quell violence and other problems that marred past Spring Weekends, including riots and the death of a student who was punched in the head in 2010.
